YouTube Channel Analysis – What can we learn from existing YouTubers?

Sisan Baniya

YouTube is a popular platform for content creation and consumption in Nepal, with many Nepali YouTubers gaining fame and popularity among the audience. One of them is Sisan Baniya, a vlogger and social media influencer who has more than 670,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel. He makes videos on travel, food, and lifestyle topics, and often collaborates with other celebrities and influencers. In this project, I used data analysis tools and techniques to explore his YouTube channel’s performance and growth over the years. I used the YouTube Data API, Python, Pandas, and Seaborn to collect, process, and visualize the data on his channel and videos.

In this blog, we will talk about my  data analysis process, findings, the current scene of YouTube in Nepal, tips for emerging, aspiring Nepali YouTube creators and a list of current top 10 YouTube channels of Nepal.

How I collected the data:

To collect the data, I first obtained an API key from the Google API Client and followed the YouTube Data API documentation to access the data. I extracted various information on his videos, such as the titles, description, upload date, duration, views, likes, dislikes, and more. I also collected data on his channel’s statistics, such as the number of subscribers, total views, and the channel ID.

How I processed and visualized the data:

To process and visualize the data, I used Pandas and Seaborn, two powerful Python libraries for data analysis and visualization. I cleaned the data, dropped unnecessary columns, and filtered out the most relevant videos. I also grouped the videos by category, month, and year of upload. I created a dataframe and plotted the results using Seaborn.

Findings:

Here are some of the interesting insights I gained from analyzing Sisan Baniya’s YouTube channel:

  • His most viewed videos feature Shrinkhala Khatiwada: Out of his top 10 highest viewed videos, 6 of them feature Shrinkhala Khatiwada, a former Miss Nepal and a popular social media personality.
  • His most viewed video is “Chepang Vlog w/Shrinkhala,” which has over 2.5M views. This shows that collaborating with other influencers can boost a YouTuber’s views and reach.
  • He has increased his video production in 2021: Sisan Baniya has uploaded 84 videos in 2021 so far, which is more than any other year since he started his channel in 2009. However, in the previous years, he had only uploaded a few videos each year, with only two videos uploaded in 2009, 2010, and 2011. This shows that he has become more consistent and dedicated to his YouTube career in recent years.
  • His top three videos are related to trekking: Sisan Baniya’s top three videos are “Chepang vlog w/Shrinkhala,” “First Gosaikunda Vlog w/Shrinkhala Second,” and “ABC Trek Vlog 3rd.” All of these videos are related to trekking in different parts of Nepal. This shows that his audience enjoys watching his travel adventures and experiences in nature.
